Thanks so much for taking the time to explore my website. My name is Gretchen Gerhardt and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Washington. I attended Bastyr University where I earned a Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology. The program at Bastyr was rooted in Health Psychology, focusing on the impact and dynamic interplay of the biological, psychological, and sociocultural influences on all aspects of health.
My 13 years of experience as a Recreation Therapist in various healthcare settings, serving multiple populations has given me a unique perspective in my approach to therapy. This knowledge and experience allows me to integrate recreation and leisure counseling into my work with clients so that regardless of someone’s situation, they are still engaged in the pursuits that bring them joy. As a Recreation Therapist, I never underestimate the importance of having fun. My interest in working with people during life’s challenges, paired with my personal desire for self-growth led me into counseling.
The foundation of my work is built upon compassion, empathy, non-judgement, and openness, establishing an environment of safety and trust. I apply an integrative, holistic approach that examines each person’s world on the inside as well as the outside. My work is rooted in attachment, feminist, and multicultural theories, looking at how our past informs our present, and how social experiences affect our perspectives and our identities. The techniques I utilize are dependent on what is best for each individual, but some common techniques I draw from include: Buddhist Psychology, mindfulness practices, strengths based, solution focused, guided imagery, various creative modalities such as art, writing, and movement, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
Outside of counseling, I enjoy reading, walking my dog, listening to music (especially when it’s live), watching documentaries, spending time with friends and family, eating good food, going on road trips, being in nature, and appreciating the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. I am a sun-seeker who feels at home near the water, but can enjoy the rainy days too. I have a veracious love of learning and a curiosity that drives me. As life unfolds and I continue to discover who I authentically am, I try my best to live and experience each moment from that authentic place.
